Riot Police Units Deployed in Rustavi, Mtskheta, Zugdidi

The riot police rapid reaction units of the Interior Ministry were deployed in Rustavi today. The troops are patrolling the city.

The Interior Ministry issued a statement on November 1, in which it warned about the anticipated aggravation of the situation in Rustavi by one of the opposition parties.

The situation was rather tense in Rustavi in the morning. Reports said the chairman of one of the polling stations was beaten up and the ballot boxes were broken in several precincts.


Rustavi is an administrative center of Kvemo Kartli region, a stronghold of the pro-presidental alliance. Opposition parties have warned of tge possibility of vote rigging in the area.  Several violent incidents were recorded in the province during the election campaign.

The special units were also deployed in Mtskheta, near Tbilisi where unknown persons raided several precincts and in Zugdidi, western Georgia.
