Adjara Modifies Constitution, Implies the Right to Maintain Military Units

The Supreme Council of Adjara Autonomous Republic today amended the Constitution of Adjara, to redefine the authorities of the head of the autonomous republic. According to the amendments, Aslan Abashidze also becomes supreme military authority of the autonomy.

“Under these amendments, the Autonomous Republic has the right to maintain own military units,” Head of the Adjara’s representation in Tbilisi Hamlet Chipashvili told Civil Georgia on November 7.

Decision of the Adjarian Supreme Council contradicts the Constitution of Georgia, under which the Autonomous Republic can not have military force.

According to another amendments the title of Aslan Abashidze will be spelled as “the President of the Autonomous Republic” in English. In Georgian and Russian the title is defined as “Head of Autonomous Republic.”
