CEC Chief Resigned

Reports say Chairman of the Central Elections Commission Nana Devdariani filed resignation this evening.

Nana Devdariani, who along with the former authorities were criticized for fraudulent November 2 parliamentary elections, did not make any public statements since Shevardnadze stepped down.

Today the Parliament approved the proposal enabling interim President to appoint new chairman of the CEC with the Parliament’s approval.

It is not clear yet who will replace Nana Devdariani. Interim President Nino Burjanadze announced today that she wants to see legal expert Davit Usupashvili on this position; “however it seems very difficult to convince him,” she added.

Davit Usupashvili was among those three candidacies, proposed to Eduard Shevardnadze for approval by the OSCE in late August. However Shevardnadze appointed Nana Devdariani on the position.
