Abashidze Visits Strasbourg

Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze left for Strasbourg on December 18 to hold talks with the officials of the Council of Europe.

It is anticipated that the issue of the January 4 snap presidential elections will be discussed during the Abashidze?s visit.

Abashidze demands postponement of the elections, otherwise threatens with the boycott.

Matyas Eorsi, head of the delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which visits Georgia at the moment, said on December 17 that the elections should be held in Adjara.

?This is the official position of the Council of Europe,? he told reporters. Matyas Eorsi added, that the local authorities of Adjara should secure for the Adjarian population?s voter rights. 

It is expected that State Minister Zurab Zhvania will hold talks with the head of Adjara Autonomous Republic after Aslan Abashidze returns from Strasbourg.
