CEC Announced Results of Run-off Parliamentary Elections
The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced today the preliminary results of the run-off parliamentary elections held in several single-mandate constituencies of Georgia, simultaneously with the presidential elections on January 4.
Representatives of the Burjanadze-Democrats bloc, led by Nino Burjanadze, the Interim President and Zurab Zhvania, as well as the National Movement, led by Mikheil Saakashvili won the elections in the most of the constituencies.
The following MP candidates won the polls: Gigi Tsereteli of the Burjanadze-Democrats election bloc – Mtatsminda single-mandate constituency, Givi Targamadze of the National Movement party, led by Mikheil Saakashvili – Saburtalo constituency, Mikheil Machavariani of the Burjanadze-Democrats β Samgori constituency and Koba Davitashvili of the National Movement β Gldani constituency.
The run-off parliamentary elections were also held in several regions of Georgia, including Tianeti, where Ilia Archemashvili of the Labor Party won the polls, Akhaltsikhe β Nugzar Parunashvili, Khoni β Akaki Gogokhidze of the National Movement, Lanchkhuti β Bidzina Gujabidze of the National Movement, Poti β Roman Melia of the Burjanadze-Democrats and Kutaisi β Nino Burjanadze of the Burjanadze-Democrats.
The court canceled the results of the fraudulent November 2 parliamentary elections under the party list system; however, the results of the elections in the single-mandate constituencies were not annulled.
Thus during the repeat parliamentary elections the voting will be held only under the party list system, while the 75 seats in the new Parliament will be already occupied by those MPs who won the elections in the 75 single-mandate constituencies held on November 2.
