CEC Prefers a Later Date for Parliamentary Polls
Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Zurab Tchiaberashvili said today the CEC supports postponement of parliamentary elections for a later date in order to better prepare for polls.
It is expected that Nino Burjanadze, the Interim President, will set a date of the repeat parliamentary elections for early March.
“This is the Interim President’s prerogative to set a date and the CEC will have to obey this; however, we should somehow to manage to computerize voter lists,” the CEC Chairman said at a news briefing on January 5.
The New Rights party, which is in the opposition to the current authorities, expressed protest regarding appointment of the elections in March. Davit Gamkrelidze, the leader of the party said that more time is needed to prepare for polls.
