Saakashvili Vows to Target Shevardnadze’s Family in his Anti-Corruption Drive

President-elect Mikheil Saakashvili said in an interview with the Associated Press on January 5 that former President Shevardnadze’s family’s assets would be targeted in his anti-corruption drive. 

“I never promised Shevardnadze we would not take assets he misappropriated. I promised him his physical security,” Mikheil Saakashvili said.

On January 4 Mikheil Saakashvili said that introduction of “the drastic anti-corruption legislation” would be one of his first steps after taking over the President’s office.

With the 25% of votes, counted Mikheil Saakashvili received more than 96% of support in Sunday’s snap presidential elections. According to Central Election Commission Chairman Zurab Tchiaberashvili, the figure is unlikely to change significantly when final results are released on January 7.
