U.S. Hailed Free Presidential Elections in Georgia

Deputy spokesman of the U.S. Department of State Adam Ereli said on January 5, that the United States welcomed free presidential elections in Georgia.


“We believe that the presidential election of January 4th marks a significant step forward in the development of democracy in Georgia. We welcome the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe’s preliminary assessment that these elections demonstrated notable progress over previous elections and brought the country closer to meeting international standards,” Adam Ereli said at a news briefing in Washington on January 5.


“We look forward to working closely with President-elect [Mikheil] Saakashvili to support Georgia’s democratic and market economic reforms, fight against corruption and intensify relations with the United States, Europe, and all of Georgia’s neighbors,” the Deputy Spokesman added.
