Georgia has a New National Flag

New flag was more popular during the November
bloodless revolution, than the previous flag.
The Parliament of Georgia approved today a new national flag. The proposed flag, previously used by Mikheil Saakashvili’s National Movement as a party banner, represents a white field with centered red cross and smaller four crosses in the corners.

According to some historians this flag was flown in Georgia since ninth century.

The banner is to replace the current dark red-black-and-white flag that was adopted by Georgia’s first independent republic in 1918 and restored after Georgia’s regained independence in 1991.

The members of the New Rights party walked out from the chamber to protest the approval of the party banner as a national flag.

The new authorities displayed the five-cross flags in the main streets of the capital streets right after the January 4 presidential elections, in which Mikheil Saakashvili received 96% of the votes.

In 1999, the Georgian Parliament voted to change the national symbols, including the flag. In response President Shevardnadze set-up a special commission to work over the new symbols of the country. However, no proposals have been suggested by the commission.
