Russia Denies it Demands 500m to Close down Bases in Georgia

Deputy spokesman of the Russian Foreign Minister said on January 15 that Russia has not demanded USD 500 million to withdraw its troops from Georgia.

“During the talks between the Georgian and Russian sides the sum needed for closure of the military bases in Georgia has never been discussed,” Russian official told Itar-Tass news agency.

Georgian Foreign Minister Tedo Japaridze said after visiting Moscow this week that Russia demanded USD 500 million to pull out military bases. “The sum is unreal,” he added.

Russian Foreign Ministry official also said that Moscow demands 11 years to close down bases in Georgia, “however this period might be reduced in case the additional foreign funding will be available.”

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov ruled out on January 14 hasty withdrawal of the Russian troops from Georgia and said that treaty between the two countries will be necessary to close down military bases in Georgia.
