Kofi Annan, Saakashvili Discussed Abkhaz Issue

“Georgia has no complains towards the UN in regard of resolution of the Abkhaz conflict,” Mikheil Saakashvili, who will be sworn in as a president of Georgia this weekend said in Davos on January 22 after the meeting with the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

“Abkhaz conflict resolution is up to us. At first we should absolutely reinforce our control throughout Georgia, strengthen our army and then we will be able to solve the Abkhaz conflict. The UN’s role should be to support Georgia on the international arena,” Mikheil Saakashvili told reporters.

In his recent report to the UN Security Council, released on January 19, UN Secretary-General says that progress in resolving the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict remains “painfully slow.”

Kofi Annan appealed the Abkhaz side “to abandon its uncompromising position and take advantage of the change of leadership in Tbilisi to negotiate a mutually acceptable and lasting settlement.”
