Shevardnadze Met Powell

Former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, who celebrates 76 year anniversary today, held a meeting in Tbilisi with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on January 25.

“We discussed U.S.-Georgian relations. I thanked Mr. Powell for the support, which the United States provided to Georgia in difficult times. I can not say other details of the meeting,” Eduard Shevardnadze told reporters after talks with the U.S. Secretary of State.

In one of his interviews Eduard Shevardnadze has accused the U.S. of helping to remove him from power.

Colin Powell has already met with Georgian State Minister Zurab Zhvania and Interim President Nino Burjanadze.

He has also held talks with visiting Foreign Minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanyan, who will attend the presidential inauguration as well.

Later Colin Powell will meet Mikheil Saakashvili, who will be officially inaugurated as the country’s new President today.

After meeting with the President-elect, Colin Powell will hold a joint press conference with Mikheil Saakashvili.
