Sukhumi Calls Tbilisi for Restraint
President of unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba appealed to the UN to pressure on Georgia’s new leadership to restrain from “actions and statements undermining peace process.”
“Against the background of power transition in Georgia, the country’s new leadership has made statements, which cast doubts over Georgia’s intentions to solve the conflict with the peaceful ways,” Ardzinba says in its appeal to the UN.
Abkhaz side is concerned about Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s statements that Georgia will restore territorial integrity and needs a strong army. However, Saakashvili always reiterates that peaceful resolution of the Abkhaz conflict is top priority of Georgia.
Vladislav Ardzinba also says in his appeal, “Abkhazia has enough strength and commitment to protect its independence.”
