Parliament Approved Constitutional Changes
Parliament approved late on February 5 constitutional changes with the first hearing.
Constitutional changes would keep strong presidential powers intact but give deputies a say in forming the government.
The opposition, as well as many legal experts claims that the proposed amendments would greatly enhance the President’s power at the expense of the Parliament.
President Mikhail Saakashvili urged earlier on February 5 legislators to quickly pass the constitutional changes in order to form the cabinet and push forward reforms to overcome current crisis in the country.
