Merger of Ruling Parties Postponed

Merger of President Saakashvili’s National Movement party and State Minister Zurab Zhvania’s United Democrats, which was scheduled for January 4 at the founding congress, was postponed.

The officials of the both party say that the reason of postponement of the founding congress of the united party was caused by the organizational problems.

However, the decision was preceded by the statement of Koba Davitashvili, member of the National Movement and a close ally of President Saakashvili, about quitting the party.

As Davitashvili said, his decision was motivated by his unwillingness to join the party together with State Minister Zurab Zhvania. He also protested against the constitutional changes. Davitashvili claims that the constitutional amendments are made for Zhvania’s interests, who will become the Prime Minister.
