Tbilisi’s New Appointment Triggers more Tensions with Batumi
General Prosecutor Irakli Okruashvili appointed Davit Asambadze as the Adjarian capital Batumi’s chief military prosecutor.
Reportedly, the authorities of the Adjara Autonomous Republic expressed protest regarding the appointment as the decision was not agreed with the leadership of the region.
Previously all the new appointments in the Autonomous Republic were made by the local authorities, or at least with the agreement of the regions’ leadership.
Before the new appointment Davit Asambadze was Deputy Military Prosecutor of western Georgian town of Poti.
Tensions between Tbilisi and Batumi have increased recently after the central authorities demanded from the Adjarian leadership to abolish local security ministry, however the Adjarian authorities refuse to obey this order.
