Saakashvili Denies Intentions to Cancel Adjarian Autonomy
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said today, that the central authorities of Georgia will not cancel Adjarian Autonomy.
“I want to tell each Adjarian, that the rumors disseminated by the Adjarian authorities regarding my intentions over cancellation of the Autonomy, are not true,” Mikheil Saakashvili said on March 15, at a news briefing in a western Georgian town of Poti.
He also dismissed as “dishonest rumors” allegations about the intentions of the central authorities “to destroy the mosques in Adjara and to persecute Muslim part of population of Adjara.”
“We recognize freedom of religion. Such statements are aimed at intimidating the local population, that is inadmissible,” the President concluded.
