Saakashvili Calls for High Voter Turnover

In his televised addressed to the nation on March 26 President Saakashvili called on the population to actively participate in the elections.

“We should jointly care for our country. Each citizen should go to the polling stations and cast a ballot,” the Georgian President said.

He also stressed the importance of free and fair elections in the Adjara Autonomous Republic.

“Do not be afraid of any pressure, go to the polling stations and make your choice. This is of crucial importance,” Saakashvili said, adding he would send Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania to Adjara on the elections day to monitor the situation there.

Earlier Adjarian Leader Aslan Abashidze pledged to secure free and fair elections in the troubled region. Polls in Adjara, notorious for widespread ballot-rigging, will be closely watched by the international as well as the local election observers.
