Ex-Chief of State Audit Agency Sentenced to Pre-Trial Detention

Court sentenced Sulkhan Molashvili, former Chairman of the Chamber of Control – main state audit agency – to three month pre-trial detention on April 23.
 
Sulkhan Molashvili is accused of misuse of power and illegal financial transactions. Chief Tbilisi Prosecutor Valeri Grigalashvili that Molashvili is suspected of turning a blind eye to tax evasion by various companies in return for 30% of the taxes they should otherwise have paid.
 
However, Molashvili, who was a close ally of former President Eduard Shevardnadze, dismisses allegations, saying that charges are politically motivated.
