U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell thanked visiting Georgia’s Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania on April 26 “for the support that Georgia has provided to the United States on the war on terrorism, and especially the direct support they have provided to us in Iraq.”
“It means a great deal to the American people to know that Georgia stands with us in this time of challenge,” Colin Powell told reporters after talks with Zurab Zhvania in Washington.
Georgia increased its military presence in Iraq in early April from 70 to 159 soldiers. Georgian Defense Ministry reported on April 26 that it plans to further increase number of soldiers in Iraq to 500 by June.
“We are proud to be part of international war against terror and this is very important obligation for Georgia, and Georgia will continue to do its best to play our role in this war, which we see as our own war as well,” Georgian Prime Minister said.
