National Security Council Discussed Situation in Adjara
The National Security Council of Georgia convened its emergency session on May 4, in the wake of disbanding protest rally in Adjarian capital Batumi on May 4 by the security forces of Aslan Abashidze.
“We will discuss the recent developments in Adjara, including the today’s clash between Adjarian security forces and the peaceful opposition’s rally,” Secretary of the National Security Council Vano Merabishvili said before the session on May 4.
A protest rally was reportedly attacked by the local security forces in Adjarian capital Batumi on May 4. Initially the security forces tried to disband protesters with water cannon, however failed and used truncheons later. Dozens of protesters are reportedly injured.
The Parliament unanimously approved a statement on May 4 demanding from Head of Adjara Autonomous Republic Aslan Abashidze “unconditional resignation.”
