Presidents Spokesman: Russian Security Chief to Visit Batumi
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s spokesman Giorgi Sulkhanishvili said that Secretary of the Russian Security Council will arrive in Adjarian capital Batumi on May 5.
“Russian Secretary of National Security Council Igor Ivanov will arrive in Tbilisi and meet President Saakashvili and then will leave for Batumi. I can not make further comments,” Giorgi Sulkhanishvili told the reporters.
The statement of the Georgian President’s spokesman follows a phone conversation between Mikheil Saakashvili and Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 5. Situation in Adjara was discussed during the talks.
Igor Ivanov visited Georgia last November and mediated between by then opposition leader Mikheil Saakashvili and Georgian ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze, that led to latter’s resignation. Igor Ivanov served as Russia’s Foreign Minister last November.
