Georgian-Abkhaz Talks in Sukhumi

The Georgian-Abkhazian talks over security guarantees will be held in breakaway Abkhaz capital Sukhumi on May 20 under auspices of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia.

The Georgian side will be represented by Georgian State Minister Goga Khaindrava, who is in charge of conflict resolution, while the Abkhaz side will be represented by Abkhaz de facto Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba.

The talks will be chaired by Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Georgia, Ambassador Heidi Tagliavini.

The Abkhaz side has recently expressed fears that Tbilisi might use force for reunification of Georgia.

However, Goga Khaindrava denied allegations as ?absurd and groundless.? During the May 20 talks he will try to assuage the fears of the Abkhaz side.

President Saakashvili said on May 19, that he will make a special statement over Abkhazian and South Ossetian conflict settlement and ?reunification of Georgia on May 26 – the Georgian Independence Day.?

The Georgian leadership has already launched consideration of a new concept over Abkhazia conflict settlement, which considers creation of a two-member federation state.
