Breakaway South Ossetia Holds Polls
Parliamentary elections are being held in Georgia?s breakaway republic, South Ossetia, on May 23 to elect a 34-seat Parliament.
According to the Information and Publication Committee of the unrecognized republic the electionswill be monitored by observers from Russia?s North Ossetia Republic as well as from Moldova?s breakaway Transdnestria Republic.
The central government of Georgia lost control of the region as a result of an armed conflict in 1990-1992. The South Ossetian authorities now aim at joining Russia?s North Ossetian Republic. Official Tbilisi and international organizations do not recognize the parliamentary elections as legitimate.
