Georgian, Ossetian Sides Agree to Set up Joint Checkpoints

According to an agreement reached by the Georgian and Ossetian sides last week, joint checkpoints for the Georgian, Ossetian and Russian peacekeepers, will be set up in the South Ossetian conflict zone.

The Georgian State Minister Goga Khaindrava, who is in charge of conflict resolution, and Boris Chochiev, the de facto Special Affairs Minister of the breakaway South Ossetia, met in the village of Tkviavi on June 4 to discuss the issue.
 
A joint checkpoint already operates in the village of Tkviavi, which lies less then 10km from the breakaway South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali.

Georgian authorities sent extra troops to protect the Tkviavi checkpoint on May 31, a move that sparked harsh protests from both South Ossetian and Russian authorities.
