Russian Senators Call for Restraint in South Ossetia

The Council of Federation of Russia, the upper house of the Russian Parliament, passed a statement on June 9 expressing concerns over the recent developments in Georgia?s breakaway South Ossetia.

The Russian senators claim that the tension in South Ossetia poses a threat to peace and stability throughout the entire Caucasus region.

The state reads: ?there is no alternative to a peaceful resolution in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict.?

?The members of the Council of Federation are sure that the Georgian authorities will implement necessary measures to avoid further escalation of the conflict,? the statement continues.

Russian State Duma, a lower house of the Parliament, also released a statement over South Ossetia, condemning the Georgian authorities? decision to mobilize forces in the conflict zone.

Later, on June 5, the Parliament of the self-styled South Ossetian Republic appealed to the Russian State Duma to recognize South Ossetia as an independent state, and take measures to protect the region’s population, many of whom are Russian citizens.
