Georgian Border Guards on High Alert

Georgian border guards at the Ingush, Chechen and Daghestani sections of the Russian-Georgian border are on high alert after the heavily armed gunmen attacked governmental building and police posts in Russia?s Ingush Republic, neighboring with the rebel Chechnya.


Commander of the Georgian Border Guard Department Badri Bitsadze said that the Georgian border guards are on high alert and will ?eradicate any attempts of militants to infiltrate on the Georgian territory.?


?We were informed from our Russian counterparts about the overnight raids of armed groups on Ingushetia,? he told Rustavi 2 television on June 22.


He also said that additional checkpoints of the Georgian border guards were set up at the Ingush, Chechen and Daghestani sections of the Russian-Georgian border last month to minimize any possibility of illegal cross-border movement.


Reports say at least 45 people, including civilians and acting Interior Minister of Ingushetia were killed as a result of a surprise raid of the armed groups on the capital of Ingushetia Nazran.
