Sozar Subeliani to be Nominated as Ombudsman
President Mikheil Saakashvili said during the meeting with NGO leaders on July 6 that he will propose that human rights activist and journalist Sozar Subeliani as Georgia’s new Public Defender (Ombudsman).
Sozar Subeliani currently leads the human rights Liberty Institute’s “Rule of Law” direction, and is a long-time journalist with Radio Liberty.
MP Elene Tevdoradze, the chairperson of the parliamentary committee for human rights, strongly endorsed Subeliani’s candidacy. Subeliani is also supported by the leading Georgian non-governmental organizations.
The position of the Public Defender has been vacant for more than 10 months. Former Public Defender Nana Devdariani was appointed by ex-President Shevardnadze as Chairperson of the Central Election Commission last September and resigned following the “Rose Revolution” in November 2003.
