Parliament Passes Controversial Proposal Regarding By-Elections
The Georgian Parliament approved an amendment to the election code on October 12 which says that the participation of one-third of all eligible voters will not be necessary to declare by-elections valid.
Hence, the upcoming MP by-elections in Tbilisi?s two ? Krtsanisi and Didube – single-mandate constituencies as well as in the Zestaponi and Gori provincial constituencies, scheduled for October 24, will be announced valid, no matter how many voters cast their ballot during the polls.
The Parliament?s decision was harshly criticized by a small group of opposition MPs from the Republican Party.
