Georgia Falls Back in Media Freedom Index
Georgia ranked 94th in an annual worldwide index of press freedom issued by the Paris-based lobby group for media rights Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders). The report indicates the state of press freedom in a total of 167 countries.
In last year?s similar report, which included a total of 166 countries, Georgia was ranked 73rd.
According to Reporters Sans Frontieres “Georgia’s fall to 94th position is largely due to unrest in the autonomous republics of Adzhara and Abkhazia, which gave rise to press freedom violations.”
Moldova, ranked 78th and Armenia, ranked 83rd, are ahead of Georgia among the Commonwealth of Independent States. Latvia is ranked 10th, Estonia 11th and Lithuania 16th. Russia is on 140th place.
