U.S. Hails Georgia’s Contribution to Coalition Forces

Spokesman of the U.S. Department of State Adam Ereli said that the Georgian authorities are considering sending extra troops to Iraq, adding that the United States “welcomes Georgia’s important and valued contribution” to the coalition forces in Iraq.

“I know that the Georgian Government is looking at, I think, additional deployments in Iraq. I’m not aware that any final decisions have been made. We certainly welcome — we certainly recognize, to date, Georgia’s important and valued contributions to the coalition efforts in Iraq in support of the people of Iraq. And decisions on further deployments are obviously something that the Georgian Government will make but I haven’t – I’m not aware that those decisions have been made,” Adam Ereli, Deputy Spokesman of the U.S. Department of State said at a news briefing on November 1.

Georgian Defense Minister Giorgi Baramidze told reporters upon his arrival from Iraq on September 7, that Georgia will increase the number of its troops stationed in Iraq from from the current 159 to 300. According to Baramidze sending extra troops to Iraq was scheduled for October, but it has not happened yet.
