Kokoev Visits Moscow, Warns over ‘Georgian Incursion’
President of breakaway South Ossetia Eduard Kokoev, who is visiting Moscow, met with the members of the Russian Duma Council, the lower house of the Parliament, on December 8 and warned that a renewal of an armed confrontation in the conflict zone is anticipated.
Eduard Kokoev was meeting with the Russian parliamentarians from the left-nationalist Rodina (Homeland) party in Moscow, according to the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee.
“Renewal of the confrontation is anticipated in the next two-three weeks and this time it [confrontation] will be even fiercer,” Eduard Kokoev said.
It has been relatively calm in the South Ossetian conflict zone after armed clashes between Georgian troops and South Ossetian militias erupted in August.
Eduard Kokoev reiterated that South Ossetia seeks joining Russia. “We understand that Russia may be subjected to pressure in regards to the launching of this process. However, we think that we have all the grounds – including historic, political and legal – to positively solve the issue,” he added.
