Members of Italian NGO Arrive in Georgia

Fifteen members of the Italian non-governmental organization “Terra del Foucco” had been waiting for three days at the Larsi checkpoint (Georgian-Russian border) for the permission to enter Georgia. Russian border officials did not allow them to cross the border and leave the territory of the Russian Federation.

As a result, the delegation returned to Russia trying to arrive in Georgia by air. Five members of the delegation arrived in Tbilisi from Moscow on January 5. Main goal of their visit is to hold talks with the de facto authorities in Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

On January 6 the members of the Italian non-governmental organizations will pay a tribute to the memorial of heroes, who fought and died for the country’s territorial integrity. Later they will meet with Goga Khaindrava, State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues, Eter Astemirova, Minister for Refugees and Accommodation and Irakli Alasania, Chairman of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile.

Other 10 members of the mission are currently in Stavropol, intending to leave for Sochi and later to fly to Tbilisi. This Italian NGO participates in the EU-supported peace project “Peace Caravan”.
