U.S. Welcomes Georgia’s Efforts over South Ossetia

Richard Boucher, spokesman of the U.S. Department of State, said, while commenting on Tbilisi’s political proposals for breakaway South Ossetia at a news briefing on January 26, that the United States is interested in dealing with with the issues of South Ossetia and other regions peacefully.

“We certainly welcome efforts to deal with the issues of South Ossetia and the other regions in a peaceful manner, as part of Georgia. And so we welcome the idea that President Saakashvili put forward some proposals, and I’m sure we’ll talk — keep in touch with the situation, learn more about them as he proceeds,” Richard Boucher said.

Speaking to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) President Saakashvili unveiled a plan, providing for greater autonomy for South Ossetia.
