President of the unrecognized Republic of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoev expressed sorrow over the death of Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania, saying that “Zhvania played a great role” in the peaceful resolution of the South Ossetian conflict, the Press and Information Committee of breakaway South Ossetia reported on February 3.
“He spared no efforts to cease the Georgian aggression in the summer of 2004 [referring to sporadic clashes between the Georgian troops and Ossetian militias that occurred last August]. We hope that his death will not affect the process of the [Georgian-South Ossetian] talks,” Kokoev said.
Special Affairs Minister of the unrecognized South Ossetian Republic Boris Chochiev said, “Zurab Zhvania was a representative of the team of the Georgian authorities, which can be described as the party of peace.”
