MPs Want Foreign Minister to Brief on Bases

Davit Gamkrelidze, the leader of the opposition New Rights parliamentary faction, proposed on May 20 that the Parliament convene Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili to brief MPs over Moscow?s recent proposals regarding the pullout of Russian military bases from Georgia.

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said in response that it will be more appropriate if Salome Zourabichvili briefs a small group of leading parliamentarians behind closed doors.  Apparently, the details of the new proposals will be discussed at a session of the parliamentary bureau, which unites Chairmen of the Parliament?s Committees and leaders of the parliamentary factions.

?We hope that a constructive agreement will be reached on Monday [on May 23 at the next round of Russian-Georgian talks] over the military bases,? Nino Burjanadze said on May 20 at a plenary session of the Parliament.
