Ex-Foreign Minister Comments on Recent Developments in Country

Ex-Foreign Minister and current leader of the political party “Georgia’s Way” Salome Zourabichvil said on March 7 that the opposition parties should focus more on the murder case of Sandro Girgvliani, rather than on the issues related with the cash registers.

The opposition New Rights, Labor, Conservative and Republican parties plan to hold a protest rally on March 9 against the government-imposed new regulations for outdoor market vendors related with cash registers. The opposition also plans to demand an investigation into the murder case of Sandro Girgvliani.

Speaking at the opening ceremony for her party’s new office in downtown Tbilisi on Rustaveli avenue, Salome Zourabichvili said that the investigation into Girgvliani murder case is a much more important issue. She also said that a political standoff involving the cash register problem is “not serious” and can be solved through a dialogue with the authorities without any street protests.

“But the problem is that we have lost the culture of dialogue. This is the plague of our politics,” Salome Zourabichvili said.

She also said that her party plans an inaugural assembly on March 12 in Tbilisi. “This will be a new type of political party oriented towards society and public participation,” she said.

Zourabichvili said that the Georgia’s Way will run in the local self-governance elections, scheduled for this autumn. “These are very important elections, which I think should be less politicized,” she added.
