New Rights Call for Probe into Okruashvili’s Allegations

Parliament should set up a special commission to probe into allegations leveled by ex-defense minister, Irakli Okruashvili, against his former ally, President Saakashvili, the opposition New Rights Party said on October 1.

The New Rights Party has refused to join other major opposition groups in calling for mass protest rallies to demand the release of Okruashvili. They are also calling for early parliamentary elections and a change in the election code.

Mamuka Katsitadze, a lawmaker from the New Rights Party, said only a thorough and unbiased investigation could put a halt to speculation and further allegations about the issue.

“The investigating commission will either result in the president’s impeachment or in the refutation of the accusations leveled against him,” he told reporters.

The ruling National Movement Party, however, has already ruled out the possibility of setting up any parliamentary investigative commission.

“If there is something that needs to be probed in the Okruashvili statement it will be studied by the General Prosecutor’s Office,” Giga Bokeria, a lawmaker from the ruling party, told reporters on October 1.
