Candidate Warns against Yes to NATO Plebiscite

Voting for NATO membership in the January 5 plebiscite would amount ?to saying no to the lost territories and a possible military confrontation with Iran,? Irina Sarishvili, a presidential candidate and leader of Party of Hope, said on January 2.

?Even if [people vote] yes in the plebiscite it won?t help the country to join the alliance,? Sarishvili said. ?Voting yes means rejecting the temporarily lost territories of Georgia and involvement in a war with Iran ? a possibility that may develop between the United States and Iran.?

Sarishvili is the only presidential candidate calling for Georgian neutrality.
