Adjarian Parliament Convenes
The first session of the Supreme Council of Adjara, the legislative body of the Autonomous Republic, will be held on July 20.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili arrived in the Adjarian capital Batumi on July 19 to attend the Supreme Council?s inaugural session, which is underway just two and a half months after the peaceful ouster of Adjara?s ex-leader, Aslan Abashidze.
As a result of the local snap elections in Adjara on June 20, President Saakashvili?s Victorious Adjara party won 28 of the 30 available mandates in the legislative body. The remaining two seats are occupied by the opposition Republican Party members.
The Chairman of the Supreme Council, as well as Chairmen of the Committees, will be elected at the inaugural session on July 20.
