Parliamentary Committee Offers Reduced Military Service Term
The Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security agreed on September 22 to reduce the term of service for military conscripts to one year.
According to the chairman of the committee Givi Targamadze one year is sufficient time to learn basic military training.
The committee also reviewed proposals to abolish the Military Departments at the universities. Currently, those enrolled in higher education institutions within the Military Departments are exempt from the draft and graduate with a military rank.
Some MPs argue that this system breeds corrpution and leads to social differentiation of the army conscripts. The Committee agreed to continue reviewing this proposal.
