Russian Official Appointed as Abkhazia’s New PM
On October 6 outgoing President of the unrecognized Abkhazian Republic Vladislav Ardzinba appointed Nodar Khashba as the breakaway region’s new Prime Minister. Before this appointment Khashba worked as the deputy chief of the investment department at the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations.
Raul Khajimba previously held the Prime Minister position but stepped down after he entered the presidential race last month.
The new Prime Minister’s appointment follows a crisis which erupted in the breakaway region after the October 3 presidential elections.
“The situation is difficult. There is some kind of confusion. I was offered to take over the Prime Minister position because I am equally distanced from every presidential candidate,” Nodar Khashba said while speaking on Abkhaz television on October 6.
