European Parliament’s LIBE Committee to Discuss Georgia Visa Liberalisation Next Week

European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) is scheduled to discuss European Commission’s legislative proposal to allow visa-free travel to the Schengen area for Georgian citizens at a meeting on April 21.

The European Commission put forth the proposal on March 9. But before it can go into force, the proposal has to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of European Union, a body representing the executive governments of the EU member states.

“I think there will be an agreement in upcoming months… We can get forward with that and the promise will be kept that in the course of this year, probably before the summer break, we will have decisions on that,” Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Elmar Brok, said after meeting Georgia’s Foreign Minister, Mikheil Janelidze, in Strasbourg this week.

Janelidze said that the goal of his meetings with the members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg was to “accelerate decision” on Georgia’s visa liberalisation.
