Russia to Work on Deported Meskhetians’ Issue
(Tbilisi, June 13, Civil Georgia) – special group at the Migration Service of the Russian Federation will be created that will work on the issue pf Meskhetians deported from the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1944.
According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti Head of the Russian Federal Migration Service Andrei Chernenko stated at the news briefing today that the “issue of the deported Meskhetians is not only the problem of Krasnodar [region in Russia, where up to 20,000 Meskhetians are living], but also of Georgia.”
Repatriation of Meskhetians till the 2012 is one of the stipulations laid down by the Council of Europe when Georgia joined the organization in 1999.
