Continuation of Elaboration of Framework Agreement Depends on Putin’s position

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, August 19, 2002) – President Putin has to decide whether continue or not the elaboration of framework agreement between Russia and Georgia, said president Shevardnadze in his traditional radio interview on 19 of August.

“Putin should clarify this issue himself”, stated Shevardnadze commenting on recent statements by Russian politicians who asserted that deteriorated relations between Russia and Georgia makes it impossible to continue joint work.

According to Shevardnadze, Russian leadership is interested in “creating such document, where interests of both countries will be considered”.

President stated that he intends to appeal Vladimir Putin to prevent anti-Georgian campaign, which is encouraged by certain Russian politicians.
