President’s Envoys Left for Batumi to Monitor Port and Customs

President Saakashvili’s representatives to the Adjarian Autonomy left for Adjara on April 4 to try for second time to start supervising port of Batumi and Sarpi customs checkpoint at Turkish border.

Abashidze agreed after talks with Saakashvili on March 18 on appointment of the President’s representatives to Adjara to monitor cash rich port customs.

However Davit Akhalaia the Presidents representative at Sarpi checkpoint and Vasil Sanodze, the President’s envoy to the port of Batumi failed last month to fulfill their duties after the Adjarian leaders’ refusal.

Abashidze demanded formal decree of the President envisaging his representatives’ duties.

“We already have this official decree, which outlines our responsibilities and duties, thus the Adjarian leadership will have no excuse any more for not letting us monitoring port and customs,” Davit Akhalaia told reporters on April 4.
