German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Visit Georgia
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Tbilisi soon, Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze’s press office announced on July 31, following his meeting with the German Ambassador to Georgia, Heike Peitsch.
Bakhtadze said at the meeting that the Georgian government considers Chancellor Merkel’s visit “highly important” for deepening bilateral cooperation between Georgia and Germany.
Angela Merkel, whose party won the national election last year, giving Merkel her fourth term in office as a Chancellor, first traveled to Tbilisi in 2008, meeting then President Mikheil Saakashvili after the Russo-Georgia War.
The most recent high level Georgia-German meeting was held in September 2017, when Georgia’s ex-Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili visited Berlin and met with his German counterpart.
