U.S. Calls on Russia ‘to Prevent Further Escalation’ Near Occupation Line

The United States called on all sides to avoid escalation amid the recent construction of a Georgian police checkpoint between the Chorchana village in Tbilisi-controlled Khashuri Municipality and Tsnelisi village controlled by occupied Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia.

In a statement of August 30, the U.S. Department of State Spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus said the U.S. “is monitoring reports of military buildup” near the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) in Georgia.

U.S. called on the sides to work through the European Union Monitoring Mission hotline and the Geneva International Discussion Co-Chairs “to resolve the situation.” It also called on the Russian Federation “to utilize all available channels to prevent further escalation of the situation along the ABL.”

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives also released a statement yesterday, saying “Russia’s further militarization of South Ossetia is outrageous and unacceptable.”

“Putin and his government continue to recklessly disregard the sovereignty of other nations. Russia must immediately cease its destructive behavior and respect Georgian sovereignty,” the statement reads.
