Georgia Confirms Second Coronavirus Case
Amiran Gamkrelidze, Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health, confirmed on February 28 the second case of coronavirus in Georgia.
Gamkrelidze said the second case was confirmed late-night yesterday. The second Georgian national, woman, 31, who tested positive on the virus, returned to Georgia from Italy. The patient’s health condition is satisfactory, said Georgia’s health official.
Gamkrelidze also noted that as of February 28, 87 persons are in quarantine in Georgia.
The Georgian Interior Ministry announced on February 27 that “to prevent the spread of new coronavirus and to offer prompt response to the cases of possible infection, the Ministry will conduct inspection of passengers arriving from the countries defined as high risk zones,” among them China, South Korea, Iran and Italy.
“Officers of the Main Division of the Border Management and Coordination under the Patrol Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are working in round-the-clock regime to inspect the citizens entering Georgia from the above mentioned countries, as well as those, staying in the mentioned states for the last two weeks,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the Hungarian air company Wizzair has restricted flights to Italy, including from the Kutaisi International Airport.
Georgian government created ad hoc interagency group for tackling coronavirus challenge led by Prime Minister Gakharia on February 26. The group decided to restrict land-travel of Iranian citizens to Georgia and Georgian nationals to Iran for two weeks. The Georgian authorities have cut flights to and from Iran since February 23.
Earlier on January 29, Georgian government took the same measure regarding the flights with China.
The outbreak of coronavirus has killed over 2,600 people, majority of them in China, and infected thousands globally. The virus was confirmed in 51 countries.
