14:45 GMT+4 – Abkhazia Quarantines Village Labra

Abkhaz authorities decided to quarantine Labra village of Ochamchire district for 14 days, considering the fact that the latest COVID-19 victim was the fifth patient to test positive for the virus in the village. The report by the health ministry of the occupied region also stated that a part of village residents was already tested for the virus.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have announced that a man, 52, died of coronavirus complications in the village Labra of Ochamchire district on August 23.

10:15 GMT+4 – 19th COVID Death Reported

Georgia reports 19th coronavirus related death. Medical Director of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases, Marina Ezugbaia told journalists that the deceased woman, taking COVID treatment at home, was an overweight hip fracture patient. The patient experienced fat embolism which caused the death, Ezugbaia said. The deceased woman belonged to the Lenjeri (upper Svaneti) cluster of patients, noted Marina Ezugbaia.

10:10 GMT+4 – 8 New Cases, 13 More Recoveries

Georgia reports 8 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 1429. In the meantime, 13 more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 1150.

Marina Ezugbaia, Medical Director of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases told journalists today that one of the new patients belongs to Lenjeri cluster, two others contracted the virus from other patients, four cases, among them three truck drivers, were imported.  The remaining eighth newly-infected patient is a medical worker, Ezugbaia added.

In the meantime, two patients, both children, have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 80. The number of active cases in the region to date stands at 138.

15:00 GMT+4 – WHO Delivers Humanitarian Aid to Abkhazia

The World Health Organization (WHO) delivered humanitarian aid to Abkhazia as the region is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, Apsnypress reported.

According to the report, the humanitarian cargo, including disinfectants, personal protective equipment, special suits and oxygen concentrators, will be delivered to Bacteriological Laboratory and the staff of the Gudauta Hospital, Abkhazia’s main medical facility treating COVID-19 patients.

The WHO assistance was provided with the assistance of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the overall coordination of Sabine Machl, UN Resident Coordinator in Georgia.

The delivery was made possible with the financial support of the European Union and the USAID, the source added.

14:30 GMT+4 – COVID Testing to be Expanded

The coronavirus task force decided to expand COVID-19 testing, which now should now become available for the personnel working in the service sector (employees in the hotels, cafes, bars, clubs) across the Black Sea coastline.

NCDC Head Amiran Gamkrelidze said at a news briefing today that the expanded tastings will begin tomorrow.

He added that PCR testings will also become available in the Black Sea beach boulevard of Batumi, Georgia’s top summer destination, where holidaymakers will be allowed to check their virus status free of charge.

Georgia’s National Disease Control Center (NCDC) says sources for 10 coronavirus cases to date remains unknow for Georgian health authorities.

13:00 GMT+4 – Shutdown Lifts in Mestia Municipality, Except for Town Mestia, Lenjeri from August 21

Georgia’s coronavirus task force announced that the quarantine measures will be dropped in all settlements of Mestia Municipality, except for the hardest-hit town of Mestia and Lenjeri village starting from August 21.

Due to high epidemiological risks, Mestia municipality was shut down on August 10.

NCDC Head Amiran Gamkrelidze said 3,509 people were tested in Mestia Municipality. In addition, Gamkrelidze stated, 1,246 persons that had travel history in Mestia have been tested for the virus. Out of a total of 4755 checked persons, 49 have tested positive for COVID-19.

18:00 GMT+4 – UNICEF Delivers Aid to Abkhazia

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has delivered the second batch of humanitarian aid to medical-prophylactic and socially oriented institutions in Abkhazia, Sokhumi-based Apsnypress media outlet reported.

According to the report, 29,000 medical masks, 58,000 surgical gloves, 500 gowns, 655 liters of liquid soap, 670 liters of hand sanitizer, 1085 liters of disinfectant for surface treatment, 80 pieces of non-contact thermometers were brought to Abkhazia as part of the second UNICEF’s delivery in total.

UNICEF delivered the first shipment of medical aid to Georgia’s Russian occupied region in May.

18:00 GMT+4 – UNDP Delivers Fifth Batch of Medical Aid to Abkhazia

Sokhumi-based media outlet Apsnypress reported that the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) delivered the fifth batch of personal protective equipment for medical workers, as well as goods for a total of USD 26,200 to Gudauta hospital, Abkhazia’s main medical facility treating COVID-19 patients, on August 15.

The humanitarian aid includes 2,000 bio-protective coveralls, 140 N95 respirators, 20 infrared thermometers, 10,000 nitrile gloves of various sizes, 4,000 shoe covers, 300 liters of hand sanitizer, 250 liters of disinfectant, 10 disinfectant mats and 250 liters of antibacterial hand soap.

17:00 – Georgia Restricts Regular Flights Through September 

Georgia’s Civic Aviation Agency reported that the country restricts regular flights through September 30. The restrictions do not apply to recently resumed Munich, Paris and Riga flights.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have appealed for volunteers to help doctors in Gudauta Hospital, Abkhazia’s main medical facility treating COVID-19 patients.

“Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, doctors in Abkhazia have been working hard, getting tired and sick. Today, there is a shortage of staff, as the number of patients has sharply increased,” occupied region’s health ministry reported on August 16.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have reported 26 COVID-19 cases, the highest number of daily cases since the pandemic outbreak. This brings the region’s tally of total confirmed cases to 182.

In the meantime, eight patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 66.

The number of Abkhazia’s active COVID-19 cases stands at 113.

13:00 GMT+4 – Education Ministry Recommendations for Public Schools Ahead of New Academic Year

The school year for 2,084 public (secondary) schools will begin on September 15, according to the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science. The Ministry published today several recommendations the schools will have to observe amid pandemic.

New guidelines for public schools include:

• observing the one-meter distance between students;
• all persons except for students are required to wear face-mask;
• schools are required to have stocks of face-masks;
• cleaning restrooms after each and every break;
• half an hour break between shifts, in case schools work in shifts;
• arranging a special temporary isolation room for the students with virus symptoms;

Each school is entitled to decide individually the length of lessons, albeit the lessons should be no shorter than 30 minutes; The schools will now be allowed to commence study process at the most suitable time for them – 08:30, 08:45 or 09:00.

The schools are allowed to introduce a mixed model – combining in-class and remote lessons – as well, in accordance with the Education Ministry. For V-VI graders the schools can have a day of remote classes per week; VII-XI graders can have not more than two days per week for online classes, while XII graders are allowed to have a maximum of three days of online classes in a week.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have reported five new cases of COVID-19, bringing the region’s tally of total confirmed cases to 148. In the meantime, five more patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 50. The region’s number of active cases stands at 95.

Abkhazia is recently facing a new spike of cases, with 110 coronavirus cases being reported since July 21.

Moscow-backed authorities of Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia have reported that all of the COVID-19 patients have now been discharged from the hospital. Tskhinvali recorded a total of 89 coronavirus cases since early May.

10:30 GMT+4 – 14 New Cases, 44 More Recoveries Reported

Georgia has reported 14 new cases, that brings the tally of total confirmed cases to 1264. In the meantime, 44 new recoveries were reported, taking the number of recoveries to 1054.

Medical Director of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases, Marina Ezugbaia, told journalists today that out of 14 new cases two are from the cluster of patients from Gachiani village of southern Gardabani municipality, nine are the contacts of other patients, while remaining three cases are imported.

Speaking of a sharp number of recoveries, Ezugbaia said the majority of newly recovered patients – without specifying an exact number – are Georgian servicemen who were repatriated from Afghanistan for COVID-19 treatment.

Georgia repatriated 38 COVID-positive soldiers from Afghanistan in July, of which eight were recovered the previous month.

Occupied Abkhazia has confirmed nine new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of region’s total confirmed cases to 143. In the meantime, seven more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 45. The number of active cases to date stands at 95.

The region is recently facing a new spike of cases, with 105 cases being reported since July 21.

15:00 GMT+4 – Government Shuts Down Upper Svaneti

Due to high epidemiological risks – namely, after revealing at least 16 cases of COVID-19 in the area in the last two days – Georgia will shut down Mestia Municipality (historic upper Svaneti province), the country’s sought after tourism destination. Leaving and entering Mestia municipality will be banned, according to the coronavirus task force.

The Government will impose stricter quarantine restrictions in the village Lenjeri and Ushguli community, locations of COVID outbreak in upper Svaneti. The government will in addition halt movement between the town of Mestia and its surrounding villages.

The health authorities are tasked to pursue intensive epidemiological research in the area, while police are set to enforce movement restrictions to and from the municipality.

In the meantime, the Government decided to send all of the tourists visiting the municipality to quarantine zones.

13:30 – Village Karajalari Reopened

Quarantined village Karajalari south to Tbilisi reopened today following 17-days-long closure.

The government decided to shut down the village on July 24. Governor of Kvemo Kartli, Shota Rekhviashvili then said that the authorities were forced to take restrictive measures as they failed to convince locals on the need for COVID-19 testing.

According to the Georgian national census of 2014, Karajalari, an ethnic-Azeri majority village, is home to 4,136 inhabitants.

Georgia has reported 25 new cases of a novel coronavirus, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 1250. In the meantime, 10 more recoveries take the overall number of recoveries to 1010. The number of active cases to date stands at 223.

Medical Director of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases, Marina Ezugbaia, told journalists today that out of newly confirmed 25 cases, one was revealed in Gachiani, southern Gardabani Municipality, one patient was transferred from occupied Abkhazia, five cases were imported, 16 are the contacts of other COVID patients, one is a medical worker, while health authorities are now trying to detect the source for remaining one case.

In the meantime, Nino Vibliani, Deputy Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region told journalists that out of 25 new cases 17 were confirmed in Zemo (upper) Svaneti province.

19:30 GMT+4 – Russian Doctors Arrive in Sokhumi as Cases Surge in Abkhazia

Kremlin-backed Abkhaz authorities have reported that a group of five doctors from Sechenov First Moscow State University has arrived in the region to help Abkhaz doctors treat COVID-19 patients.

Since April, Abkhazia has reported 134 COVID-19 cases, of which 38 have recovered and 3 died. The number of active cases in the region of less than a quarter-million people stands at 93.

The region is recently facing a new spike of cases, with 96 cases being reported since July 21.

Amongst the new patients is the tourist having recently arrived in the occupied region after Abkhazia’s lifting travel restrictions with Russia. The patient was reportedly sent to Russia for treatment.

18:40 GMT+4 – Abkhazia Confirms Five New Cases, Total Hits 114

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia said that out of 96 tests conducted five have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the tally of region’s total confirmed cases to 114.

11:30 GMT+4 – PM Gakharia Unveils Further Anti-Crisis Measures

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia announced additional anti-crisis measures to tackle economic and social challenges amid the coronavirus fallout. The third stage of the anti-crisis plan – worth of GEL 410 million (USD 132 Million), of which GEL 130 million was allocated from StopCov fund – entails a social assistance package for individuals, including helping children and students as well as covering utility fees for the households.

The Government will offer one-off assistance of GEL 200 (USD 65) to children under 17.

In the meantime, the state will cover a semester tuition-fee – GEL 1125 / USD 365 – for the students whose families have received less than 150,000 points in the system for socially vulnerable persons. The students belonging to the same category, who had their student status suspended due to financial difficulties, will receive a full-tuition waiver – GEL 2250 / USD 730 – for the academic year 2020-21.

As stated by the Prime Minister, the Government will also cover utility fees for the households consuming less than 200 cubic meters of gas and 200 kilowatts of electricity per month in November, December, January, and February.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have reported two new cases, bringing the region’s tally of total confirmed cases to 109. The number of active cases in Abkhazia reportedly stands at 69.

11:00 GMT+4 – 15 New Cases, 12 More Recoveries

Georgia has reported 15 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of total confirmed cases to 1197. In the meantime, 12 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 974. To date, the number of active cases stands at 206.

Medical Director of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases, Marina Ezugbaia, told journalists today that out of 15 new cases 4 were confirmed in Gachiani village of Gardabani Municipality, Georgia’s new COVID hotspot, 3 are imported cases, four contracted the disease from other patients and one of them is a medical worker. The health authorities are working to uncover sources for the remaining three cases, she added.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have reported that through conducting 88 tests, nine new cases of COVID-19 were revealed, bringing the region’s tally of total confirmed cases to 107. The number of active cases stands at 67.

10:30 GMT+4 –  Three New Cases, Three More Recoveries Reported

Georgia has reported three new cases, taking the tally of total confirmed cases to 1182. In the meantime, three more persons have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 962. The number of active cases to date stands at 203.

Moscow-backed authorities in occupied Abkhazia have recorded 14 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of region’s total confirmed cases to 98.

17:00 GMT+4 – Moscow, Sokhumi Lift Travel Restrictions

Abkhazia lifted all four-months-long travel restrictions with the Russian Federation. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin also signed the order earlier today, reopening Russia to Georgia’s Black Sea region.
